When a Rhinoscopy Veterinary Assessment May Provide Answers
Dr. Leo and our team may recommend a rhinoscopy veterinary assessment when an external examination and routine testing hasn’t given us enough information. It helps us identify what’s happening inside the nasal cavity so we can provide targeted treatment without the guesswork.
Chronic or Reverse Sneezing
Recurring sneezing or sudden bouts of reverse sneezing often tell us your dog or cat has a deep irritation in their nasal passage. A rhinoscopy allows us to locate the source.
Persistent Nasal Discharge
Clear mucus, thick discharge or blood from one or both nostrils can be a sign of inflammation, infection or a mass formation. Being able to inspect internally lets us narrow down the cause.
Nasal Congestion or Airflow Obstruction

A pet rhinoscopy can reveal a lot of different conditions that impact the nasal passage in dogs and cats. This can include:
Structural or Congenital Abnormalities
Some pets are born with narrow or unusual nasal passages, which can affect airflow. A rhinoscopy helps us confirm the shape, function and severity, and whether we need to intervene.
Foreign Bodies
The live imaging allows us to see if any grass seeds, plant matter or debris has found its way into your pet’s nasa; passage, and may even allow us to remove it in the same procedure.
Infections
Deep bacterial or fungal infections aren’t always visible on the outside. Internal imaging helps us work out the right medication and long-term care for your feline or poochy friend.

What to Expect When Your Pet Receives a Feline or Canine Rhinoscopy
Before The Procedure
Before an endoscopy, we’ll complete a full health assessment to ensure safe anaesthesia, often paired with blood work or other veterinary imaging. Your furry friend may need to fast beforehand, which we’ll guide you through step-by-step so you feel comfortable and confident.
During the Procedure
To start, your pet will be placed under general anaesthesia for their comfort. A fine endoscope is then passed into the nasal passages and upper through. We can see live visuals to help us identify irritation, growths, infection, polyps or foreign materials then and there.
After the Procedure
Once the rhinoscopy is complete, most pets recover well and can return home the same day. They may sneeze or have a small amount of blood-tinged discharged shortly after, but this generally resolves quickly. We’ll discuss our findings and treatment options with you before we send you and your four-legged plus one home.
