What to Expect During a Cat or Dog Colonoscopy Procedure
Step 1. Preparation & Assessment
Your pet will undergo a thorough health check prior to their colonoscopy. This may include blood tests and imaging to make sure they are suitable for anaesthesia and if a colonoscopy is required. A bowel preparation plan will also be provided, such as when they need to fast.
Step 2. The Procedure & Aftercare
The colonoscopy is performed under general anaesthesia to keep your pet calm and comfortable. Once under, a small, flexible camera is gently inserted to examine their colon lining. We may take a biopsy sample, if needed. Most fur babies can go home the same day with aftercare instructions and follow-up support.
Reasons Why We May Recommend a Colonoscopy For Dogs
Colonoscopies are a minimally invasive, non-surgical way for our vets to see inside your dog intestines using a small camera. We can identify inflammation, foreign objects, abnormal growths, strictures or other causes of ongoing bowel symptoms that may not show up on imaging alone.
